Starting with his iconic Archibald chair, Wallpaper*Award for the “Best Domestic Design” section in 2009, Jean-Marie Massaud reinterprets the stylistic features of the original model in a more streamlined and informal key, creating another of the best-loved and most distinctive models in the Poltrona Frau catalogue. In the design of the Archibald Gran Comfort armchair, Jean-Marie Massaud imagines a kind of soft overabundant sack that falls with a rich movement of folds onto a thin metal architecture with a steel frame and feet. The result is a welcoming and sophisticated contrast of volumes and materials that quickly becomes a recognised model of contemporary elegance. Archibald Gran Comfort is also characterised by its special technical features. In fact, the armchair was born from the idea of being able to easily break down all of its primary components: a metal shell, soft goose-down padding and the outer cover, which overlay each other. In this way, the leather and fabric are attached to the frame with removable Velcro strips hidden in the contact area with the perimeter frame. A solution that makes the product more practical and also sustainable as it can be easily broken down at the end of its life. The base of the Archibald Gran Comfort armchair rests on four steel feet connected by a perimeter frame with Ruthenium finish. The seat structure is made of beech. The backrest is made of steel with perimeter tamponade by means of elastic straps, while the shaped upper part is made of deformable rubber. The structures are both finished in scratch-resistant black paint. The springing of the seat is made of elastic straps. The upholstery of the seat and backrest is two shaped polyurethane foam cushions, attached to the metal frame by Velcro strips. A down quilt, also secured by Velcro strips, overlies the cushions. The outer cover of Archibald Gran Comfort is available in Pelle Frau® Safari leather or fabric in the Gaban or Loop versions, and is removable in both versions. In the leather version, the perimeter profile is made from edge dyed leather and hand-painted in a matching colour. The stitching can be tone-on-tone or contrasting. In the fabric version, the stitching is tone-on-tone. The Saddle Extra Soft leather label with the Frau armchair logo embossed on the front and back is stitched at the bottom right of the central plate, between the two fabric parts.
